Born in Havana in 1989, Rafael Villares is one of Cuba’s most exciting young artists. Having studied at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes San Alejandro, Villares has recently completed his study at the infamous Instituto Superior de Arte, Havana, Cuba.
Though still in the early stages of his career, Villares’s work has gone from strength to strength, participating in the last three Havana Biennials and exhibiting alongside some of the nations biggest and most critically acclaimed artists. His work, standing alongside the artistic masters of Latin America, holds its own with its innovative concepts, approaches and utilisations of materials. Often starting out as an installation with performative elements, his art works develop into whole projects and series spanning a range of mediums, such as sound, drawing, paint and photography.
Cuban curator and critic Elvia Rosa Castro has heralded Villares as a compulsive sensualist. She touches upon Villares’ use of the same romanticism and sensuality found in the works of Rousseau. An inescapable element of the artists work is his fascination with nature and it’s bearing in his work as a central subject type. Rosa Castro explains that Villares’ lyrical installations playfully engage with its surrounding environment and in so doing form a constant reference to the belief that our relation to nature is the key to a creative process.
Villares has exhibited in Europe, Asia, Latin America and the U.S. His work can be found in collections in the U.S., Latin America and Europe.
Since its inception in 1984, the Havana Biennial has been the most important art event to take place in Cuba. Taking place every three years, the 13th edition of the Bienal de la Habana will be staged on October 5th 2018.
