About this tour

The Havana Biennial is the most important cultural event that takes place in Cuba. Staged every three years, the Biennial serves as a thermometer, testing the temperatures of the contemporary art world. The Biennial, since its inception in 1984, has had a historical focus on, what is now called, the “Global South” originally titled the “Third World”. Since 1991 the event has been open to the Northern Hemisphere and has become truly globalised in recent editions.

Biennial themes have explored a wide range of topics, from post-colonial states to the way technology has impacted the way we communicate. The Centro Wifredo Lam is currently working on the theoretical framework which will define the 13th Havana Biennial. For now, previous meetings and presentations have signalled that the Centro Wifredo Lam will be analysing and attempting to reinvent the Biennial model itself, the title possibly being “A Model Under Permanent Construction”. Director Dannys Montes de Oca has expressed a desire to invert the focus of the Biennial and analyse itself instead of the world. Dannys explains that the decentralisation of the event and the role of the curator is key to the 2018 concept and seeks to make the Biennial structure a more horizontally functioning institution.

The Centro Wifredo Lam will be using social media and the world wide web to unearth emerging artists and provide them with a platform to display their works. Simultaneously the Centro Wifredo Lam will work widely with curators across the world to tap into untouched art movements.

The event, although supposed to take place in late 2018, has been moved to 2019 due to the damages caused by hurricane Irma to the island. The dates in themselves have not been finalised but these are the dates being worked towards.

Cubartours will be organising a week long specialised tour for the 13th Havana Biennial. The unique tour will include entrance to all exclusive Biennial events, opportunities to privately visit Cuban artists, attendance to conferences and talks, guided tours by members of the Centro Wifredo Lam and a host of special activities available to our clients alone. The entire experience will be overseen by our very own Jasmine Chohan who is studying a PhD at the Courtauld Institute of Art focused on the Havana Biennial. The tour was incredible -the most enjoyable thing I did in Havana. The artists you guys chose were so interesting and it was nice to see the broad spectrum of art in Cuba. I'm so happy I booked this, all the girls were so friendly and knowledgeable.

Jasmine curated one of the most incredible arts experiences we've had. Anyone who is a genuine art lover and interested in connecting with the source of these works should go on a tour. It is truly an elevated experience--5 stars all around!

The tour was insightful and interesting. We had the rare experience to see works of art up close and personal, as well as the chance to discuss those works with the artists themselves. An experience I never would have had if it were not for this tour.
